River Kingfisher
Taiwan is a migratory stop off for many birds. Living in the city, we don’t see a lot of birds, however a trip to the local park, and especially once you get out of the city, birds can easily be spotted. We spotted this guy while picnicking at a national park this week. The River Kingfisher is found near creeks & ponds; he stands alone on rocks or stands on branches by the water awaiting the opportunity to dive down and catch a small fish. We spent about 10 minutes watching this orange bellied, blue back guy. Every time we got close, he flew away. We took a few pics of him – but this pic from our “Birdwatcher’s guide to the Taipei Region” book is much better than any we could capture. He made the front cover! Sadly, the legend of the Kingfisher is that he came from rainbow colored stones that fell from the hands of a goddess who was mending the heavens. The Truth is, God created this beautiful bird (Gen 1:20-23), and He knows how much I enjoy watching His creation. Let us worship the Creator, not his creation (Romans 1:21-25).
